New Definition of Autism Expected in DSM-V
The fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), due out in May 2012, is likely to include a more strict definition of autism which is expected to reduce the number of individuals with this diagnosis. The proposal would eliminate Asperger’s syndrome and Pervasive Developmental Disorder – Not Otherwise Specified (PDD-NOS) and merge these under the single diagnosis of autism spectrum disorders.
